Description
Marzo 18k Yellow Gold Art Deco Diamond, Gemstone & Enamel Vanity Case (189.2g.)
This extraordinary Marzo Paris jeweled compact is a remarkable example of high-luxury vanity accessories produced during the golden age of Art Deco design. Crafted in solid 18k yellow gold and weighing an impressive 189.15 grams, the piece reflects the era when Parisian jewelers transformed everyday personal objects into works of fine jewelry. Luxury compacts of this caliber were carried by fashionable women of the interwar and mid-20th century period, serving not only as cosmetic cases but as statement pieces that reflected status, artistry, and the sophistication of Parisian design houses.
The compact is lavishly decorated with 158 round brilliant diamonds totaling approximately 1.58 carats, creating a brilliant surface that captures light from every angle. Complementing the diamonds are two cabochon lapis lazuli gemstones totaling approximately 2.64 carats, whose rich ultramarine color provides dramatic contrast against the warmth of the gold and the brilliance of the diamond setting. The addition of enamel work further enhances the visual depth of the piece, showcasing the delicate decorative techniques that made Parisian jewelers of this period internationally renowned.
Luxury compacts produced by French ateliers such as Marzo Paris were never mass-market items. They were often handcrafted in small numbers and designed as functional jewelry pieces, frequently gifted for special occasions or carried by society women attending soirées, opera houses, and grand hotels throughout Europe and America. Surviving examples with substantial gold weight, intricate enamel decoration, and diamond-set surfaces are increasingly scarce, as many were melted for their precious metal value or lost over time.
This particular example stands out for its impressive size, exceptional weight, and elaborate gem-set construction. Measuring 88.00mm in length, 50.90mm in width, and 10.90mm in thickness, the compact has a commanding presence in the hand while maintaining the elegance expected from a fine Parisian accessory. The piece closes securely with a push clasp and bears the engraved “Marzo Paris” signature, confirming its origin from the famed French maker.
In excellent condition (9/10), the compact shows only light surface wear consistent with careful use over time, preserving both its structural integrity and decorative brilliance. Pieces of this scale and craftsmanship rarely appear on the market, making this an exceptional acquisition for collectors of Art Deco vanity objects, fine jeweled accessories, or historic Parisian luxury goods.
